Gil Scott-Heron - B Movie
Musician, poet, godfather of Rap… the legendary Gil Scott-Heron has passed away at age 62. He was a brilliant and troubled man, and will be sorely missed.
I first came across him in the early 80’s when, as a young naive punk rocker, I got a slot as a deejay at a college radio station… but the only available show was the Jazz show. Finding Gil Scott-Heron’s album, Reflections, changed my life. It was beautiful, articulate, and angry… angry in a way that made my suburban, white boy, punk rock anger seem small, puny and uninformed. Like the punks, Gil Scott-Heron was no fan of Ronald Reagan. Unlike most of the punks, he was able put his disdain for the man so eloquently, it was a wonder to behold. Suddenly, for me, merely saying “fuck you!” wasn’t enough anymore.
So here is one of his opus’.. the stupendously anti-Reagan song/diatribe, B Movie. After 30 years, some of the names are dated, but the sentiment will never grow old.
Bonus… Gill Scott-Heron - Inner City Blues
From the album, Reflections (Arista Records)
Gil was the realest. Guys like him come once in a lifetime…
